Born in Finland in 1926, he arrived to the states just before World War II and enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17. While in service the crew was involved in a harrowing encounter with an armed minelayer ship and they escaped through the formosa strait minefield, hearing the chilling scrape of mine cables along the sub’s hull, stands out as a moment few would ever forget — and one that speaks to the silent, often unseen heroism of submariners in World War II.
After his military service, his continued contributions as an author and illustrator in his later years show a passion for storytelling and creativity that continues to inspire. And now, celebrating his 99th birthday and 25th wedding anniversary, he stands as a symbol of endurance, talent, and grace.
