LA Galaxy Postgame Top Quotes

LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney

On Erik Thommy’s recent performances:

“I thought he was excellent. I thought he was fantastic against Toluca.
I think, as I said the other night, it was like the altitude didn't affect him. He was just moving at a different speed. He was able to move with the ball, drive with it into the next line.
Same thing. I mean, he's got a work rate and a tenacity about him, that he plays with for 90 minutes. He's got this quick twitch that we don't really have sometimes in our midfield.
They make them a little different for our group. And then he was able to get out and what a great finish on the run. So, again, I’ve used him a little bit high.
I've used him a little bit low, depending on where, whether we need to build attacks or whether we need him in the finishing of attacks. So, for me, he's been a little bit of a little bit of an X factor since he's gotten fit and gotten into this group where I can use him where I feel like we need that sort of energy and boost and burst of speed and intensity in our midfield.”

On what he learned from this win:

“I just think for our group, I said this a couple weeks ago, just kind of learning how to win and what it takes to win, especially on the road. It's been a little while for our group to get a win on the road, and guys suffered physically today.
Some of it was the short turnaround. Some of it, just the early game, and humid conditions, but the guy's learning what they need to put into it. The commitment to defending and protecting our goal.
The execution on a few of these plays and transition, and the set piece goal, things like that. So, it's not easy to win games in the MLS on the road. And for us today, we learned a little bit more about ourselves and maybe what it's going to take at times to get these results on the road, and I think the guys felt it emotionally in the locker room, super positive.
I think they felt like they really accomplished something out there today and what they committed to and what they worked for out there. So, all of those things are positive moving forward. We've got, obviously, an important Concacaf game on Wednesday.
We'll learn things from the last two games before we play Toluca again, we'll take some things to put into our consideration. But then we have 2 more road games for MLS. So it's not like we're going home for a stretch here.
We're back in the league. We're back on the road for 2 more. So, it's going to be a grind in those two games.
And I think we can take a little bit away from today's experience for sure and maybe how we need to get results at times on the road.”

On reaching 150 career wins in MLS:

“I'm happy to be coaching this group of players. What I do this for is the guys that I work with, you know, at whatever clubs. At Toronto and here, and I've always said that this is about the players.
And I do it to try to help players achieve success and feel winning, and so, I appreciate just the effort that they put out there, every time we go out. And so, for me, that's the joy. The winning is, obviously, the goal. Always winning games, winning championships.
It's always the standard that we want to be at, but for me, the joy is seeing what happened in that locker room after the game today, and the excitement, and what they felt from the sacrifice today is what this is about. So, I was super proud of the guys, today it just happened to be the 150th.
That's great. Hopefully, we can bring more of these types of wins and performances home so our fans can feel the same type of joy, and that's what we're looking forward to moving forward.”

LA Galaxy Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski:

On what today’s win meant for the team:

“I think it was a huge win. It was a huge win for the club. I think it shows our fight, our togetherness. It's a tough stretch of games. Obviously, we just played, and we play again in a couple days.
So, I think it was massive to get this one away from home. I mean, we haven't won away in a really long time. I think it just showed our togetherness. It showed how much we want to work for each other, how much we want to, you know, leave everything out in the field.”

On what it means to have the support of the coaching staff:

“As a goalkeeper, I think, having confidence from those around you is huge. Personally, I'm a pretty inherently confident person, and I just want to go out there and do my best and help the team, and, I mean, I sat here a week ago, saying that I need to make a few more saves, and, luckily, I was able to do that today, and, you know, it's a massive victory for us.”

On how building chemistry off the field helps with on-field camaraderie:

“I think the closer you are as a group, that's when you can get through hard times together. When things become fractured, when things start to, you know, become disconnected, that's when cracks start to become bigger, bigger, and bigger. We have a really close group. We have a great locker room. I think it starts with the leaders. It starts with Marco, Maya, these guys who have been around and played all over the world, played at World Cups, and, you know, they lead us, and we kind of all just fall in behind, and everybody has to do their part and make sure that they're ready to go when their name is called, and I think that also shows what the people who aren't starting and who are coming off the bench, how they're making impact.
I think being close off the field is a really important thing for any team, especially for us when we have to go through these battles when we're on the road, when we're, you know, backs against the wall, that's when you can look to your left and right and know that that person had your back and that's what we did today.”

LA Galaxy Midfielder Erik Thommy:

On feeling comfortable in the Galaxy system:

“I said from my arrival, it takes time for me and for the other players to get used to each other.
And I sort of think, that there's a lot of room for improvement, but when you look at the schedule, and it's not an excuse. I'm really, really happy I got a lot of minutes in the last games. [In the next matches] I want to do as much as I can, and it's also what I want to do in the next following days and weeks as well.”

On what the locker room sentiment is:

“I mean, everybody was happy. Tired! I could tell everybody was tired. Like I said, we needed to travel straight from Mexico straight to Austin. The time in between was short, that means almost no recovery for us, but finally, a smile in everybody's face, and I could tell that the three points were huge for us, and boost our confidence, looking forward to these next games.”

On scoring his first goal for the Galaxy:

“Honestly, the last 15 minutes were tough for us, but everybody was fighting. Everybody was giving everything what we had a tank, and that's what was the key to for the three points today. It was an important goal for me. I am really, really happy. I had a couple of chances in the last games. So, it's also a relief for me and hopefully keep going and like I said, try to help the team wherever I can.”
