Jaime Penedo and Panama opened the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-1 draw with Caribbean minnows Haiti on Tuesday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
Haiti's Duckens Nazon scored in the 86th minute to cancel out an early goal by midfielder Alberto Quintero.
The Panamanians appeared to be cruising to a victory when when a poor turnover at midfield helped the Haitians go on a counter. Nazon then dribbled past a Panamanian defender, and then beat Penedo to give the Haitians their equalizer.
Panama will look to right the ship on July 10 when they face Honduras at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Masschusetts in their second Group A match.
